What is citizen journalism?

Still confused? Here are some sources of more information on CJ and journalism in general.

Well...what is citizen journalism?
The concept of citizens performing the reporting, verifying, analyzing and production roles of traditional journalists. This includes investigative pieces, articles, and pictures being transmitted through social media, online blogs, and can sometimes be picked up by the media.

The Elements of Journalism lists 10 ideals of traditional journalism that will help journalists fulfill their duty of providing people with the information that they need to be free and self-governing. We figured that these might be a bit outdated, so the five of us sat down and put a new spin on these ideals that make them a bit more suitable for citizen journalism. Let us know what you think! Do you agree/disagree?
  1. Its practitioners have an obligation to exercise their personal conscience. *
  2. Citizen journalism's first obligation is to report fair and balanced news.
  3. Its first loyalty is to its audience.
  4. Citizens should have rights and responsibilities when it comes to the news. *
  5. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover. *
  6. It can serve as an independent monitor of power.
  7. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise. *
  8. Participants have the freedom to specialize on subjects that are of interest to them. There is no obligation to keep the news comprehensive and in porportion.
  9. It can strive to make the significant interesting and relevant.

If you're still interested in the history of journalism or ethics, take a look at these documents that are full of really useful information. Like always, we have to give credit where its due. These documents were compiled and passed out to us by our professor Dr. Paula Poindexter.

We watched these movies in class, and they really helped us identify the role journalism plays in society, and allowed us to analyze the choices, actions, and ethics of journalists and the result of their behavior.
